Als der liebe Gott alle Tiere und Vögel geschaffen hatte, da malte er sie auch an, den Fuchs rot, den Schimmel weiß, die Hunde braun und weiß und schwarz, das Schaf weiß, und so fort. Aber als er ganz fertig war und sich alles ansah, was er gemalt hatte, da kam noch ein kleiner Vogel, den hatte er vergessen zu malen, weil er nicht zur rechten Zeit gekommen war. Da sagte der liebe Gott: »Warum kommst du so spät? Nun mußt du ganz ohne Farbe bleiben, ich habe keine mehr.« Aber der kleine Vogel jammerte so, daß er allein keine Farbe haben solle, und sagte: »Da ist doch noch von jeder Farbe ein kleines Bißchen im Topf. Schmier' mir von jeder Farbe auch nur ein kleines Kleckschen an!« Das tat denn der liebe Gott, und so kriegte der Vogel von allen Farben etwas.
