Hier beschreibt ein Patient die Klinik von Dr. Rea in Texas und seine Behandlung dort:

The rooms were devoid of volatile petrochemicals or dust, as judged by susceptible humans, acting as monitors and as registered on synthetic odor detectors. Only organically grown foods were served. Foods were stored in glass jars or in non-petrochemical-based cellophane bags. Food preparation was conducted in glass or stainless steel utensils heated by electricity. All patients during the course of diagnosis and treatment were kept in the room for at least a 16-day period. Patients were required to remove all hair sprays, cosmetics and polyester clothing before entering the unit.

At the start of his treatment he was instructed to fast for 4 days on purified water. It was like no other fast he had previously experienced. That's when he started to experience withdrawal symptoms. While being allergic to many chemicals and foods, he had also become physically dependent on these substances, as would an alcoholic or heroin addict.

In addition to a craving for food, he experienced every possible ache, pain and physical symptom he had ever felt before. An interesting and well-known fact is that people who are allergic to chemicals and foods frequently grow dependent on them.

One of the foods he tested was Monterey Jack cheese, his all-time favorite food. After devouring six ounces of cheese, he was overcome by pains in his forehead and a devastating hunger as though he had not eaten in a month. His reaction to cheese came as no surprise. It brought back memories of his first self-discovered allergy to milk products. A year earlier, he had been heavily addicted to cheeses of all varieties; every time he would eat a piece of cheese, he would experience a physical pickup. This was the standard addictive phase of food allergy in which the allergen has a stimulatory effect. Every day he would crave milk products, especially cheese, and before long, he started gaining weight rapidly.

There are many theories that trace the source of obesity to food allergies. He ate a pound of cheese every day, any cheese: imports, super-dry jack cheese, cheddar - eight ounces at one sitting and eight ounces before retiring to bed. A milk allergy may cause an individual to drink a quart of milk a day and require a milk fix at regular 8-hour intervals. Ice cream, sour cream, or other dairy products may substitute for the milk as long as the addictive and allergic protein is present. Any one of the different proteins in milk - whey, casein, or lactoalbumin - could be the cause of the allergy.

The necessary treatment for this kind of allergy is enforced abstinence accompanied by the standard withdrawal. The allergen is similar to alcohol or morphine when it becomes incorporated into the bodily processes. The body adjusts to the presence of a foreign substance that may become involved in many of the intricate biochemical reactions. It is still not known what function the allergen plays in regard to enzyme kinetics.

After a week of testing foods, fifteen permissible but not totally benign or acceptable foods were discovered. Antigen treatments were given so that other more troublesome foods could be eaten on an infrequent basis. Chemical tests revealed that he was sensitive to all petrochemicals and chlorine, which was of course present in the drinking water.

When he left the hospital with a list of permissible foods, bottled antigen and some instructions on avoidance procedures, he was urged to stay away from the cities and live near the ocean in a home, specially equipped without all of the modern conveniences.

Being an allergy patient is quite a costly ordeal. Avoiding many
